Many teachers have one or two students who just can’t seem to stay still, listen, or keep from bothering someone else. We have had teacher’s email us and say they “blew their cool” in class and now they feel they are totally out of control of themselves and their students. So the question is, what can I do to get the classroom discipline where it needs to be? Here are a few suggestions: Plan ahead. If you know you might have a problem with your own reactions plan ahead and make up you mind that you are not going to loose your cool no matter what. It doesn’t matter how you class acts they should not dictate how you act. Pray daily for them. Do not let a day go by that you do not pray for your class and for some of them on an individual basis. Take them before the throne room of God and lay them at His feet. Read James 1:1-8. If you really struggle with classroom discipline get a parent to come in to help with crowd control. You might need to get a couple of parents to sit in while you are teaching. It is very discouraging for you to prepare a lesson and then not be able to present it because of disruptions. Whatever the case get all the help you need and do not be ashamed to ask for it. If needed, get someone to fill in for you while you take a week off to refocus. We all reach our limits and need relief. It’s not bad to take time off for your own sanity and well being. Try to get to know the kids in the class. Spend time with them before and after class if there is no other time for you to be with them one on one. Explain to them how hard it is to teach with disruptions. Never be afraid to approach parents and let them know what’s going on it the room with their teen. If their teen is causing the problems let the parents know. Lastly, never forget to compliment the teens that are really trying to act right and learn. You don’t have to compliment them in public but do compliment them. Let their parents know how well they are doing. Yes, brag on those who deserve it. Bottom line: Do whatever it takes to get God’s Word in the lives of your group.
